How This Works

UK speeding fines are calculated as a percentage of weekly take-home pay (not gross salary). Band A (up to 10mph over): 25–75% of weekly income, typically min £100. Band B (11–20mph over): 75–125% of weekly income. Band C (21mph+ over): 125–175% of weekly income, minimum £100, maximum £1,000 (£2,500 on motorways). The fine is then checked against the statutory minimum (£100) and maximum.

Yes — if you are caught in Band A (up to 10mph over the limit) and have not attended a speed awareness course in the past 3 years, the police may offer you a National Speed Awareness Course instead of a fixed penalty. The course costs roughly £80–100 and takes a half day. It does not add points to your licence and does not appear on your driving record — however, insurers may ask if you have attended one, which can affect premiums.
