How This Works

VED (Vehicle Excise Duty) rates depend on when your vehicle was registered. Pre-2001: engine size. 2001-2017: CO2 emissions band. Post-2017: flat standard rate (£195) plus first-year rate based on CO2, plus luxury supplement (£425/year) for vehicles with a list price over £40,000. Electric vehicles have been exempt but from April 2025 pay standard rates.

Yes — driving or parking on a public road without valid VED is illegal. The DVLA uses ANPR cameras to check vehicles automatically. Penalties: £80 fixed penalty (£40 if paid within 28 days) for SORN violation, up to £1,000 fine if prosecuted. Vehicles can be clamped, impounded and crushed. You must also declare SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) if the vehicle is kept off the road — this is done free at GOV.UK.
