How This Works

Points accumulate on your DVLA licence record. Standard drivers face disqualification at 12 points (totting up). New drivers (those who passed their test less than 2 years ago) have their licence revoked at just 6 points — they must then retake both the theory and practical tests. Points from most offences remain on the licence for 4 years from the date of offence.

Yes — you can plead exceptional hardship at a magistrates court to avoid a totting up ban. You must show that exceptional hardship (not mere inconvenience) would result from disqualification — typically loss of livelihood, caring responsibilities or harm to third parties. Simply saying you need the car for work is usually insufficient. The court has discretion; seek legal advice before the hearing. Note: you can only use exceptional hardship once in any 3-year period.
