How This Works

The maximum MOT fee is set by DVSA: £54.85 for cars (2024/25). Garages can charge less but not more. The MOT tests 70+ items — the most common failure categories are lighting/signalling (26%), suspension (18%), tyres/wheels (15%) and brakes (12%). Older vehicles fail at significantly higher rates. Advisory items noted on the pass certificate should be monitored and fixed before the next test.

Yes — you can legally drive to a pre-booked MOT test with an expired MOT certificate, even if the MOT has lapsed. However, your car insurance may be invalid if you have an accident on the way (as many policies require a valid MOT). You cannot drive for any other purpose with an expired MOT. If your car fails the MOT, you can only drive it away if the tester confirms it's safe — otherwise it must be transported.
