How This Works
EV fuel cost = annual miles ÷ EV efficiency (mi/kWh) × electricity rate. Petrol cost = annual miles ÷ MPG × litres per gallon × fuel price. The biggest variable is electricity price — home overnight charging at 7–15p/kWh makes EVs dramatically cheaper, while relying on public rapid chargers at 60p+ erases the savings entirely.
For high-mileage drivers with home charging, EVs offer significant running cost savings — typically £800–2,500/year depending on mileage and electricity rate. The upfront cost premium (£5,000–15,000 over equivalent petrol) takes 3–8 years to recoup through fuel savings. Low-mileage drivers (under 5,000 miles/year) or those without home charging see much smaller benefits. Used EVs (particularly early Nissan Leafs and Renault Zoes) have fallen sharply in price and can offer strong value.
